Ghana Music Awards … Ohemaa Mercy, Kwaw Kese, top Nominee List

Two days after Nigeria hosted its prestigious Hiphopworld awards, Ghana officially launched her 2008 edition of Ghana Music Awards. The event saw the top musicians, ministers of state, diplomats, journalists and the general public gather to see what has changed from the previous awards.

Awards recipients who have over the last eight years bemoaned the absence of cash awards at the annual Ghana Music Awards (GMA) will this year enjoy substantial cash awards besides the GMA trophies courtesy of mobile telecommunications giants MTN.

Trends gathered that this year’s awards will have 26 categories compared to the 14 categories the event had last year. The awards will be be part of a four-day festival kicking off with a Gala Nite on April 23 where some category awards will be given out. on Friday April 25, creme de la creme of the Ghanaian showbiz industry will on a night that promises glitz, glamour and high fashion witness the main event, the MTN Ghana Music Awards Nite.

The festival is expected to climax with a massive outdoor celebration jam on Saturday April 26 that will feature performances by all award winners as well as visiting African and international guest artistes.

Mrs. Mercy Twum-Ampofo a.k.a Ohemaa Mercy whose sophomore, Edin Jesus obviously was not affected by the sophomore jinx  soars higher, sustaining the success she achieved with her first album Made Me Ho. The school teacher cum gospel artiste topped nominees list with seven nominations. Hiplife artiste Kwaw Kesse follows closely with six nominations while Ofori Amponsah and newcomer Cynthia Appiah-Kubi a.k.a.Cee bags five nominations each.

The 9th Ghana music awards will honors winners based on popularity, and air play.
