Kora Awards 2008: Much ado about the Best African Act

The coveted Kora All-Music awards has this year moved to Tinapa, Nigeria from traditional South Africa , where it has been staged for 10 years. This year’s event will witness the best African artiste or group taking home a whopping $1m courtesy of First Bank of Nigeria. However, the process through which the prize money will be won has not augured well with some stakeholders.

The awards organizers had earlier announced that nominees for the Best African Act in each zone would perform before an audience – a zonal concert of some sort-  afterwhich fans would cast their votes via sms or any other voting medium as announced by zonal organizers. Similar voting process will be conducted for the emerging zonal winners afterwhich the winner for the Best African Act and  the whooping S1m cash award will be announced.

“What Kora is trying to tell us now is that, whether we like it or not, we have to perform at their shows if we want to be nominated for the Best African Act. What if we had previous engagements already paid for, and cannot be at their event? So we loose points for absenteeism or say bye-bye to the best African act award even if we deserved it or what? I feel this Best African Act thing is turning into a competition to win one million dollars rather than the celebration of excellence it is meant to be, says a very popular Nigerian r&b act who chooses to remain annonymous. However, the news of a revamped Kora Awards ceremony and the Best African Act categories, has received by many artistes across the continent, and many are looking forward to nomination.

At a press briefing in Kenya, Kora Awards president, Ernest Adjovi explained that owing to previous criticisms about the nomination criteria by musicians and supporters. He stated that these groups have always complained that the bulk of the awards have always gone to South Africa, which has been hosting the event, and the West Africa (the birth place of the awards president Adjovi) and this influenced organizers’ decision to get the audience more involved in the selection process. “We call on all genuine lovers of Africa to come up with suggestions, ideas and concrete support that will continue to keep this dream alive,” he says.

“We do not claim to know it all or have all the answers. Our commitment and unalloyed penchant for excellence, professionalism and patriotism can only be made more meaningful with your support.” he added. Entries for the Kora Awards opened on February 15 and closes on April 15, and forms are available on the Kora website.

  3. hi guys,

my advice toward all this nominies is that, let the kora committee organise an experience professionals in music to make a final judge on kora award winners.
people might come up with different opinion which wll definately base on dere personal view and whch might be wrong musicaly.
let each each point be made by people who are trained in such fied, after then u can now take public opinion to back back the final judgment up.

  5. Hi Mr Kora President.
What exactly are you the organizers talking about an artiste, or, a group performing for an arward of the best African Act or group? I mean, I do not seem to understand it. I did not put in for this year’s episode, but I really wanna be part of the one coming up next year. But the truth is, people are getting more confused as it’s becoming more obvious that the organizers are getting much more confusoed than the Artistes themselves, maybe due to the fact that $1m price tag is at stake for the category of the best African act which has never been.

I do not think the best act should be chosen by just a performance, and the ‘unproffessinal’ audience too. Think about it people as we are all concerned. One-luv.

  6. Mr. President of Kora Awards
    Erneste Ajovi

I love browsing and watching the KORA AWARDS theprograms because I am passionate about them but as the the Kenyan commented on maybe there are things thst were left out For example, you know thet in most instances,we in our countries do not have major facilities andmaybe big halls and stages to host these events. thet maybe is the reason
KORA AWARDS happens only in south Africa just like other things end up happening there
e.g the 2010 world Cup. what I tink should be done about this is that when somebody is
nominated for a kora awardxtop 5 of africa, it is not a bad position, meaning that they also deserve something out.that can not just be the end of it, and at the one person takes all
at least you could help the remaining four, maybethrouhh exposure and maybe somekind of advertising and promoting these artist.
let the awards continue because they also help other organisations in many ways.
as you know, there are some countries with organizatios and companies that are just there meant to help their artists An example from South Africa, their artists are voted for via text messages television now withaut ignoring our other countries where commmodities like cell phones and television is no accessed by mass numbers, but these countr’s citizens are music lovers too. In developed places, when an artist is nominated it is shown every where on TV posters and even radios this is enough to make to make their suporters aware even through thewebsites and internets do you ignore the fact that not a lot of people know about internrt but love music that is why there are things that need to be changed so that Kora Awards gets to to all of us

    Thank very muche for coperation

  7. it’s a fantastic idea that this year’s kora is going to be at a different venue. i hope that this will bring in new ideas. i hope its not just a change of venue with the same all style of doing things. all the best.

  8. […] buy the stunts the Pan-African KORA All-Africa Music Awards organizers have pulled with the Best African act category. anyway, I have received several emails requesting that i post the nominee […]

  9. Mr Kora president , i like your good works and your vision , its clear that you want to explore african artiste to compete and be on the global scene , thats very good Sir and keep up the good works , am particularly interested in the Best african act awards who take the ultimate 1 million dollars , Mr President , this is first of a kind in africa and am sure you are aware that you want to make History , i have read all the categories and all the acts are wonderful , but i think you shouldnt Judge by politics , connections , and personal views you should Judge on lyrics, people votes , the way the artiste can relate with the world and has related with the world so far , someone that explore africa on the world scene , i dont want to be picky here ,but i was in europe when i heard the sound track of the movie phat girls (african queen)was done by a nigerian in person of 2face idibia ,i listen to the song and i enjoyed it ,Mr president i wish you good luck and congratulations Sir,

  10. Salut Monsieur Esnest,

Kora 2005. durban.
